Burgers are a part of America’s pastime like apple pie and baseball. They are so popular that new burger joints are popping up all over the U.S. and providing stiff competition with the huge franchises. Especially since the huge franchises have started to lose what makes a good burger anyway!
Burger Bench in Escondido, California is one of the new wave of burger establishments that is starting to make a dent in the franchises’ hold on the burger monopoly. Not only have I heard that they make an AWESOME burger (I’ve had secret squirrels try it for me), their owners are a class act. I had the wonderful opportunity of discovering that first hand as I created the branding with them.
Burger Bench Brand Building
In May of 2015, I first started working with Derek Loranger of Burger Bench on their branding. Derek’s background was in computer design which has definitely shown in his attention to detail. He wanted a fairly simple design that was usable on multiple surfaces while easily identifying what they do, create terrific burgers! Derek also mentioned that they wanted to have an artisan / modern feel to the design since it was going to be in downtown Escondido, California which has that feel to it. Since their name is Burger Bench, I thought it may be nice have a very simple burger icon within a bench style backdrop. I provided a cutout style design to ensure that all of the the pieces were easily legible at varying distances and mediums. For the font styling, I decided to use one with a slightly Western feel to get a little bit of that artisan feel in a subtle way. The final design is one color to allow for it to be easily used in printing on shirts, signage and anything else the logo will be placed.
The Evolution of Burger Bench
Once the final design was decided on, Derek and his team wanted the design to be able to be flexible with both a horizontal look as well as a more square look. Both of these designs would allow for signage to be stretched across the building while also allowing the design to be effective implemented on items such as glassware or packaging where you want a more compact image. The items below are the final fruits of our work together.
Overall the marriage of Burgers and Branding at Burger Bench has been a yummy experience!
